therio canine andrology Flashcards
hx of stud
brucella status, history. semen collection and evaluation, general PE, scrotal and prostatic exam. cryptorchid? dont breed. retained testes- neoplasia. seminomas, sertoli cell tumor.
fractions to ejaculate
prostatic, sperm-rich, prostatic. gross inspection for blood, bilirubin, pus. 70-80% motile, 80% normal morphology. frenulum is abnormal.
evaluating sperm
eosin-negrosin stain (Red is dead). h&e stains evaluate different cells in ejaculate. WBC always abnormal- infection. 10 mil/pound. prostatic exam on all intact dogs.
azoospermia
ejaculation of seminal fluid that does not contain sperm (shooting blanks). bilateral cryptorchidism, intersex animals, germinal cell aplasia, testicular trauma, orchitis, testicular neoplasia. should be able to detect ALP in ejaculate, originates in tail of epididymis.
oligospermia
low total sperm number. can still be fertile. glucocorticoids, estrogens, ketoconazole, chemo.
teratozoospermia
decreased percentage of morphologically normal sperm
asthenozoospermia
bad motility
dog accessory gland
only prostate. androgen dependent. smooth, bilobed. encircles urethra. 1st and 3rd fractions.
benign prostatic hypertrophy
common in older dogs under testosterone. can be asymptomatic, incontinent, tenesmus. ribbon like stool. affect fecal contents. not painful. castration or finasteride. n50% shrunk 3 weeks after castration. finasteride is 5 alpha reductase inhibitor, causes prostate to shrink
prostatitis
common secondary to BPH. older dogs. acute onset makes very sick. prostatic cysts. painful on palpation. chronic presents like UTI. not painful. tx castration, baytril. trimethoprim sulfa.
prostatic neoplasia
castrated dogs most common. very grave. common metastasis to ventral lumbar verterbral bodies. asymmetrically enlarged prostate
brucella canis
gram neg aerobic coccobacilus. zoonotic. mucus membranes. oronasal, fomites. screen every six months. intracellular infection. REPORTABLE. lymphadenopathy, repro dz, etc. Dx by RSAT test. sensitive, but not specific. false positive common. true negaives.
tom penis
penile spines means testosteone. penile hair rings– pain. mating failure.
tom infertility
pain, mating failure. mate preference, intersex issues, cryptorchidism. testicular degeneration may result from riboflavin definicency. raw diets.
