A

confronts clients with what they fear. (ex: having to hold a snake when you’re scared of it)

what is flooding?

A

client confronts the feared stimulus all at once. maximum level of intensity and there is no attempt to lessen patient’s anxiety/fear. (ex: if you live with claustrophobia, a flooding session might involve sitting in an extremely small, crowded room for several hours)

what is systematic desensitization?

A

client taught to relax as they are gradually exposed to what they fear. involves controlled, incremental exposure to phobic stimuli while simultaneously practicing relaxation techniques that are incompatible with anxiety. (ex: you’re afraid of birds. your therapist might ask you to talk about birds in detail. as you feel more at ease with the topic, they may ask you to look at photos of birds while you focus on breathing deeply or practicing another relaxation technique.)

anxiety- anti-anxiety meds (GABA agonists) - useful for short-term- calm jittery feelings, relax muscles.. anti-anxiety meds

most common- selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
bipolar- mood stabilizers (ex: lithium) - atypical antipsychotics- often used to treat mania
