Millieu therapy
An environment that is manipulated to help restore or promote physical or mental health.
Ex) Alzheimer’s patients may get a circular hall, clocks, memory aids
Therapeutic environment
Relationship with others will be recreated among group members and can be worked through; members can also directly help one another.
- They can meet regularly with a leader to form a stable group.
- They learn new ways to cope with stress and develop insight into their behavior with others.
Group Therapy
The problem is a family problem, not an individual one.
Sick families lack a sense of “I” in each member.
The tendency is to focus on sick member’s behavior as the source of trouble.
the sick member’s symptoms serves a function in the family.
-Therapists helps members to develop their own identity and points out the function of the sick member to the rest of the family.
Family therapy
Important group interactions occur when group members work on a task together or share in recreation.
-This helps to promote socialization, increase self-esteem
Activity therapy
Children express themselves easily in play than in verbal communication.
choice of colors, toys is revealing as reflection of child’s situation in the family.
-Provide materials and toys to facilitate interaction with the child, observe play, and help child to resolve problems through play.
Play therapy
Uses operant conditioning, classical conditioning, and desensitization to promote behavioral change.
Operant- use rewards to enforce positive behavior (positive or negative reinforcement)
Classical- person responds to a stimulus unknowingly
ex) dog now hates people because of past event
