Effective Communication Technique
That gives non-judgmental recognition to a client for a
certain behavior or contribution, or indicates attention
to and care of client (giving the client positive attention)
Acknowledging
E.C.T
When the nurse asks for additional information in order to try and understand what the client is trying to say .
Ex) “would you tell me more about what you have just said?”
“Give men an example”
“Tell me more”
“and how do you feel when you’re angry?”
“who are they?”
This tells the client that the nurse actually cares about what he has to say
Clarifying
E.C.T
Focuses client on pertinent information and helps client expand on that information; directs toward information that is important.
Focusing
E.C.T
Provides specific information to the client with or without the client’s request
Giving information
E.C.T
Offer’s nurse’s presence without attaching expectations or conditions on client’s behavior during that time.
Offering self
E.C.T
Ensures nurses understands message sent; using this technique, the nurse repeats main thought of message sent.
Restating or paraphrasing
E.C.T
Redirects content of a client’s message back to client for further thought or consideration.
Basically paraphrases what client says, reflects what client says…Especially feelings conveyed.
Ex) “It sounds like you’re angry”
“In other words, you really felt abandoned”
“I hear you saying it was hard to come to the hospital”
(The nurse summarizes what the client is trying to say)
Reflecting
E.C.T
Allows the client time to think and reflect: Conveys acceptance
allows the client to take the lead in conversation.
*Allows for quiet time without conversation for several seconds or minutes to allow for reflection about discussion that just occured, to reduce tension, or to gather thoughts about how to proceed.
Ex) use proper non-verbal communication
remain seated
maintain eye contact
sit quietly and wait
Using silence (non-verbal)
