Psychosis can be divided into the following two types of disorders
- Affective disorders

What are affective disorders?
Disorder of emotion, feeling, or mood
Affective disorders are subdivided clinically as
- Mania
- unipolar depression
- bipolar depression
Which are the four types of schizophrenia?
- Simple
- paranoid
- catatonic
- Hebephrenic (speech anomalies, hysterics symptoms, delusions, hallucinations, and childish behavior)
Is schizophrenia a disorder of multiple personalities?
No
What are loose associations?
They may jump from one topic to another in a way that is totally confusing to others
What are the characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia?
- Disordered thinking
- disturbances of behavior
- unusual realities
- delusions
- disturbances of perception
- inappropriate affect (involves showing emotion that is inconsistent with the individual’s speech or thoughts)
What is the first step in the diagnosis of schizophrenia?
Ruling out organic causes such as Huntington’s, Wilsons, temporal lobe epilepsy, brain tumors, and hypothyroidism
Is schizophrenia purely genetic?
No there must be environmental factors also
What are the positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
- Hallucinations
- delusions
- agitation and tension
- paranoia
- associational disturbances (loose associations)
- insomnia
- ideas of reference
- illusions delusions
What are the negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
- Amotivation
- poor social skills
- anhedonia (inability to experience pleasure)
- alogia (limited spontaneous conversation)
- poverty of speech (limited coherent content)
- blunted affect, with reduced expressiveness
- poor grooming and hygiene
