Drugs - Dyskenesias - Tardive Dyskenesias Flashcards
What are tardive dyskinesias?
A drug-induced disorder occurring in people taking antipsychotic medication chronically
Is tardive dyskinesia reversible?
No and there is no satisfactory treatment
How do tardive dyskinesias arise?
Arises from super sensitivity (up regulation) of postsynaptic D2 receptors in the stratum as a compensatory response to the chronic blockade of these receptors by antipsychotics
What goes on in the dopamine – acetylcholine balance in tardive dyskinesia?
The balance is shifted in favor of dopamine which results in involuntary movements
What is contraindicated in the treatment of tardive dyskinesia?
Anti-cholinergic agents
What do reserpine and tetrabenazine do in tardive dyskinesia treatment?
They deplete dopamine
What does tocopherol (vitamin E) do in the treatment of tardive dyskinesia?
It is a free radical scavenger
What are the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia?
Perioral movements such as lip licking, tongue protrusion, or darting movements
What other class of drugs can be used in the treatment of tardive dyskinesia?
Calcium channel blockers
