Drugs - Parkinsons - MAOB Inhibitors Flashcards
Which are the MAO-B inhibitors used in Parkinson’s?
Selegiline/Deprenyl (Eldepryl)
Rasagiline (Azilect)
What is the method of action of the MAO-B inhibitors used in Parkinson’s?
At a low dose of under 10 mg per day they selectively block dopamine degradation by MAO-B
What are the MAO-B drugs metabolized into?
Amphetamine and methamphetamine
At what time of the day should you take MAO-B inhibitors?
Before 2 PM because they are metabolized into amphetamine and methamphetamine
How long are the MAO-B inhibitors effective for?
Only a short period of time when given as monotherapy so usually they are used as an adjunct to levodopa
Which class of drugs used for Parkinson’s may be neuroprotective because they decrease free radical formation arising from dopamine metabolism by MAO?
MAO-B inhibitors
What is Zeplar?
An orally disintegrating tablet form of selegiline which avoids first pass metabolism to amphetamine and MAO-A inactivation
What is the advantage of Rasagiline over Selegiline?
It is five times more potent at inhibiting MAO-B and it is not metabolized to amphetamine -like substances as selegiline is so it has less psychic stimulation or insomnia
