Theoretical and Experimental Probability Flashcards
What is Probability?
The measure of how likely an event is to occur.
What is an Outcome?
Each possible result of a probability or situation.
What is a Sample Space?
A set of all possible Outcomes.
What is an Event?
An Outcome or set of Outcomes.
What is the Formula for the Probability of an Event?
P(event) = (number of favorable outcomes) divided by (number of outcomes in the sample space).
What is the Complement?
In an Event E, the complement is the Set of all Outcomes in the Sample Space that are not in E.
P(not E) = 1 - P(E) or P(E) = 1 - P(not E).
What is Geometric Probability?
A form of Theoretical Probability determined by a Ratio of Lengths, Areas, or Volumes.
What is Experimental Probability?
The Experimental Probability of an Event is the Ratio of the number of times that the event occurs, the frequency, to the number of trials.
What is Theoretical Probability?
The Theoretical Probability of an Event is the Ratio of the value of the event occurring to the total number.
