Ellipses Flashcards
What is an Ellipse?
The set of points P(x,y) in a plane such that the sum of the distances from any point P on the ellipse to two fixed points F1 and F2, called the foci.
What is the Formula for the Constant Sum?
d=PF1+PF2 or d=sqrt((x1-x3)^2)+(y1-y3)^2))+sqrt((x2-x3)^2)+((y2-y3)^2).
What is the Equation for a Horizontal Ellipse?
x2/a2+y2/b2=1.
What is the Equation for a Vertical Ellipse?
y2/a2+x2/b2=1.
What is the Equation for the Vertices of an Ellipse?
Horizontal: (a,0), (-a,0). Vertical: (0,a), (0,-a).
What is the Equation for the Foci of an Ellipse?
Horizontal: (c,0), (-c,0). Vertical: (0,c), (0,-c).
What is the Equation for the Co-Vertices of an Ellipse?
Horizontal: (0,b), (0,-b). Vertical: (b,0), (-b,0).
What is the Equation for the Relationship of an Ellipse?
c^2=a^2-b^2.
How do you find the Center of an Ellipse with a Graph?
You look at the middle.
How do you Graph an Ellipse?
You use an Equation to find the Points and you draw them.
