Looks for themes within data, and involves repeatedly reviewing the data so that trends in the meaning are discovered.
This information can be then to develop new hypotheses or to support/ challenge existing theories.

Allows the researcher to explore the data without any preconceptions which can help to generate real themes and patterns which increases validity.

Researcher bias can happen as the researcher has to interpret the data.
Extremely time consuming to undertake.
