Why was the emergence of Islam so significant?
It gave the Arabs a central role in World History, which they didn’t really have earlier.
What are the old nomadic Arabs called?
Bedouins.
What is the Hajj?
The Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.
What was the biggest change made in native Arabian religion?
At around 600 C.E. they thought out all of their other gods and started monotheism.

Muhammad Ibn Abdullah. (~570-~632 C.E.)
What is the Quran?
The Islam religious book containing Muhammad’s teachings.
What does Muslim mean?
“One who submits” (to Allah).
How does the Quran support religious fighting?
It said to fight off evil and that killing those of other religions counts.
What is the Hijra?
An event where Muhammad and some followers fled from Mecca to Medina to avoid persecution.
What was Muhammad’s last sermon about?
He explained that everyone is equal, no matter their skin color or religious practice.
What was the original view of Islam conversion by the Arabs?
They originally thought that the religion was their own and discouraged conversion.
What is the Jizya (Tax)?
A tax that non-Muslims had to pay for freedom of religious practice.
What is a Diasporic Community?
A city that maintains strong ties with its homeland.
What was a big issue in the early unifying of the Muslim Community?
Deciding who would be leader without Muhammad present proved to be a big problem.
What is the difference between Sunni and Shia Islam?
In Sunni they believe that caliphs were to be selected by the community and the Shia believe that only those related to Muhammad can be caliph.
What is the Kaaba (Mecca)?
A stone structure in Mecca with a black cloth over it that contains a special artifact.
How did the rise of Islam change the lives of women?
They had to abide to Islam rules such as the different dressing and had to deal with new things such as giving lots of alms and staying in the house more.
What were Islamic marriage rules like?
Men didn’t have to, but they practiced monogamy; which eventually became standard. Women and men alike were also given divorce laws, though men had better ones.
What is the Sultanate of Delhi?
An Islamic state formed in Northern India.
What major shift in ruling occurred in India in the eighteenth century?
The British kicked the Muslims and Turks out and took control.
What was “popular Islam” (India)?
A promotion for Islam where some Hindu gods were still included, making it more popular in India.
