What is the Great Schism?
A split in the Catholic church that resulted in the Roman Catholic group and the Orthodox Group.
What is Nestorianism?
A small branch of Christianity practiced in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia a long time ago. Europeans deemed it heretical.
How was Orthodox ruling different than Roman Catholic?
In Orthodox the emperor is believed to be assigned by God, so he gets the most power and respect.
What happened structurally to the Eastern and Western Roman Empires?
The Western Empire collapsed but the Eastern Empire stayed alive for about 1,000 years longer and became very prosperous.
What was the Conversion of Russia?
The adoption of Orthodoxy bu the native peoples, specifically the Slavics.
What did Russian religious leaders do after the fall of Byzantium?
They made their own doctrine which they called the “third Rome.”
Why is political unity in Europe difficult?
There are lots of very urban cities but they are all separated by mountain ranges or dense forests or something like that.
What is the youngest of the world’s major religions?
Islam.
What is the holy language of Islam?
Arabic.
What is Sharia?
The codification of traditional Islamic law.
What was the Sunni-Shiite Split?
A succession crisis which made two branches of Islam. The split occurred because of an argument over who would become caliph (leader).
What are the Five Pillars of Faith?
- There is no God but Allah.
- Pray five times a day facing Mecca.
- Fast during Ramadan.
- Help the poor.
- Make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca.
What big military group threatened several European countries?
The Muslims.
What were some items commonly exchanged through trade in Europe?
Wood, beeswax, furs, rye, wheat, salt, cloth, and wine.
How did mass urbanization give more job opportunities to women?
Many more workers are needed to support larger populations, so women had more opportunities and started to work more.
