Lloyd George issued an ultimatum accept the treaty or immediate and terrible war

1 Ireland would be called the Irish free state
2 the free state would still be part of the commonwealth but have dominion status Tds would have to swear an oath of allegiance to King
3 the British would have 3 navel ports in Ireland cobh bereaven and lough swilley
4 a boundary commission would be set up to decide the border between north and south
5 the govener General would be the kings representative in Ireland
Why did Collins agree to the treaty
Because the ira were in no state to start a war
Reaction to the treaty
De Valera was annoyed they didn’t consult him and split in Ireland
What were the arguments in favour of the treaty
It gave Ireland more independence than home rule
It was a stepping stone to full independence
If war started again the ira would be beaten
What were the arguments against the treaty
It did not give Ireland the republic they were fighting for
They had to swear an oath of alliegance to the King
They felt it was easy for the British to interfere in Irish affairs

That spilt split the country in two ( partition)
The north with a home rule parliament in Belfast
The south had a parliament in the Dublin which never came in to existence
