rented an acre of land from a farmer
sometimes had to rent extra land out called conacre (land rented out to grow potatoes)
lived in one room cabins with thatched roofs
4million cottiers and families were dependent on potato

reason british government did not give out free food
they were worried the irish would become lazy
what did the british government do to prevent the famine
peel brimstone ( maize from America very hard to eat not cooke properly)
public work schemes (most people too weak to work on these schemes )
poor law act ( landlords had to pay poor rate(tax) which was used to pay for the building of workhouses family separated, treated like criminals and disease spread in workhouses

why were emigrants angry at british
they did not stop the export of food out of ireland
what the private charities do to help
the quakers set up soup kitchens which gave free food to the starving
what ships did people leave in
coffin ships people died of fever in the overcrowded conditions
what were the effects of the famine
fall in population end of subdivision decline in irish language emigration agriculture change emigration landlords lost estates
drop in population
1million died
1 million emigrated
cottiers nearly wiped out as class
end of subdivion
only eldest son got land
youngers sons and daughters emigrated to cities
the eldest son took over land
family size got smaller as the son married later (population decline)

irish speaking regions in the suffered most from death and emigration
irish language continued to decline after famine as people needed English to emigrate
