A

Stalin presented himself as lenins close follower as stalin told Trotsky the funeral was the next day and tricked him to miss the funeral making trotsky seem arrogant and disrepectful of lenin

A

Stalin worked with Zinoviev and Kamenev and in 1925 forced trotsky to resign as commissar of war - no longer had control over the red army
He packed the congress lf soviets with his supporters to gain support for socialism in one country

1926 worked with Bukharin and right wing communist party whi supported ‘socialism in one country’ to expel the two as well as Trotsky in 1927

A

Tomsky was dismissed from his trade union in 1929 and commited suicide in 1936 just before being arrested by secret police
Rykov gradually removed from his position and executed in purged

Strengths of stalin

A

He had the key role of general secretary in the communist party allowing him to appoint and remove supporters of trotsky
He was the chief mourner at lenins funeral
Built an image of himself being close to lenin - edited photos
Cleverly played his rivals against eachother, used zinoviev and kamenevs fear of trotdky to help him. Then allied with tomsky, bukharin, rykov to rid zinoviev and kamenev
Promoted socialism in one country - won support in communist party, attacked bukharin tomsky and rykov for supporting NEP

Weeknesses of trotsky

A

Seen as outider - menshevik before and jewish
Made tactical mistake allowing him to be outmanouvered by stalin
Promoted world revolution - wanted soviet union to support communism in other countries but soviet union wanted ‘socialism in one country’
Lacked urgency or real desire to become leader
Prefered to win arguements and debates of power instead of forming secret allies
Underestimated stalin- seen as grey blur
