the structure of matter- chelsea Flashcards
What is chemical structure?
How atoms are arranged in a substance
What is chemical bond?
The force that holds atoms and ions together.
What is bond length?
The average distance between the nucleus and the atoms
What is bond angle?
The angle that is made when two atoms bond.
What is hydrogen bond?
When oxygen atoms of a water molecule are attracted to the hydrogen atoms of another molecule.
What is ionic bond?
Ions with different charges are attracted and form a bond
What is metallic bond?
When positively charged metal ions are attracted to the electrons and they form a bond.
What is covalent bond?
This bond is formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons.
What is polyatomic ions?
An ion made of two or more atoms
What is formula unit?
Another way of saying how many protons or neutrons of an element a compound is made of
What is empirical formula?
The simplest form to tell us the while number ratio of atoms and there compounds
What is molecular formula?
Shows the number and kinds of atoms in molecule.
What are non polar covalent bonds?
Bonds formed and the electrons are shared equally.
What are polar covalent bonds?
When two different atoms are bonded and the electrons are shared unequally.
What is organic compound?
A covalent bonded compound made of different molecules.
What are polymers?
Large molecule formed by small units of atoms
What are amino acids?
Made of carbon, hydrogon, oxygen, and nitrogen. They form proteins.
What is carbohydrate?
Organic compound made of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon that provides nutrients for living things
What is protein?
Made of more than one chain of amino acids and is component with all cells.
What is amino acid?
Organic molecules that contains carboxyl and combine to form proteins
What are Alkanes?
Hydrocarbon that have only single covalent bonds.
What are Alkenes?
Hydrocarbons that have double carbon-carbon bonds
What is DNA?
A polymer with a complex structure. Determines your genetic makeup
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound made of only carbon and hydrogen atoms
