Matter- Chelsea Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that takes up space
What is chemistry?
The study of matter and its properties and how they combine and separate with other substances
What is a element?
A substance that is made of one atom
What is an atom?
Basic building block of life. They can combine to create molecules. Atoms are made of electrons, neutrons, protons
What is a compound?
A mixture of two or more elements
What is a molecule?
It is made up of more than one type of atom, held together by a chemical bond.
What is a chemical formula?
A mixture of chemical symbols and their atomic numbers to represent a new substance.
What is a pure substance?
Has a definite chemical property and a definite physical property.
What is a mixture?
A combination of two or more substances that don’t have a chemical bond.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
Has two or more substances that remain physically separate.
What is a homogeneous mixture?
It has a uniform composition and the same properties throughout the whole substance.
What is a miscible?
Describes the ability of how a liquid can dissolve into another liquid.
What is immiscible?
Liquids that will not combine or blend
What is melting point?
The temperature when a solid becomes a liquid
What is boiling point?
The temperature when a liquid turns to a gas
What is density?
Measures how much matter is in a certain volume
What is reactivity?
When a substance has a chemical reaction by its self or with a other substance and releases energy.
What is flammability?
How easy a substance reacts to oxygen and burn when put by fire.
What are physical properties?
They are used to describe matter without changing the composition of the matter.
What are chemical properties?
Describes the matter during or after a chemical reaction and changes the matter to a new substance.
What is physical change?
A change in a substance without changing its chemical bond or making a new substance
What is a chemical change?
The change in a substance that changes the compound and creates a new substance.
