states of matter- chelsea Flashcards
What is a liquid?
Particles are more free and takes the shape of its container
What is a solid?
Particles are densely packed and make a hard substance
What is a gas?
Particles move freely and fills space
What is plasma?
Has no definite shape and particles are broken up.
What is energy?
The ability to do work
What is thermal energy?
Energy that comes from heat
What is evaporation?
Stage when liquid reach certain temperature and turn to a gas
What is sublimation?
When solids change directly to a gas
What is condensation?
When gasses turn back to liquids
What is a crystalline solid?
Solid that’s atoms are highly arranged
What is a amorphous solid?
A solid which its atoms are not organized in a definite pattern
What is surface tension?
Surface filmed caused by the attraction of particles
What is kinetic energy?
Energy that is in motion
What is heat?
Produced when molecules are moving very quick
What is exothermic change?
When energy is released in the form of heat
What is endothermic change?
System of reactants that Absorbs heat from surroundings.
What a fluid?
Non solid matter and the molecules move freely around each other.
What buoyant force?
The upward exerted on a object floating in a fluid
What is pressure?
The amount of force exerted on a substance
What is Archimedes’ principle?
The buoyant force of an object in a fluid is the same as the objects displacement.
What is pascal?
The SI unit for pressure
What is pascal’s principle?
Fluid in equilibrium exerts equal pressure in all directions
What is viscosity?
Resistance of a liquid or gas to flow
What is Bernoulli’s principle?
As speed of a fluid increases, the pressure decreases
What is Boyle’s law?
States that for gas to stay a constant temperature, the volume of gas increases and the pressure decreases.
What is Charles law?
States that gas at a constant pressure, the volume increases and temperature decreases.
Gay-Lussac’s law?
The pressure of a gas increases the temperature increases if the volume of the gas doesn’t change.
