Chapter 7- Solutions Flashcards
Colloid
Mixture with tiny particles with size between those in solutions and the ones in suspensions that are suspended
Emulsion
Mixture with two or more immiscible liquids and one liquid is dispersed in other.
Solution
Homogeneous mixture of two or more substances uniformly dispersed in a single phase
Solute
Substance that dissolves in the solvent
Solvent
The substance in which the solute dissolves
Alloy
Solid or liquid mixture of two or more metals
Heterogeneous mixture
Mixture composed of of dissimilar components
Decanting
Pouring a lighter liquid off a heavier liquid
Suspension
Mixture where the particles are more or less evenly diffused throughout the liquid
Immiscible
Liquids that will not mix
Tyndall effect
The scattering of light in a colloid
Polar compound
A molecule that has an uneven distribution of electrons
Hydrogen bonding
When a hydrogen atom is bonded to a highly electronegative atom of a molecule that is attracted to two unshared electrons form another molecule.
No polar compound
Compound whose electrons are equally distributed among the atoms
Solubility
The amount of solute that will dissolve in a solvent at certain temperature and pressure
