Sound and light Chelsea Flashcards
What is infrasound?
Sounds that are to soft for the human ear to hear
What is a sound wave?
A longitudinal wave caused by vibrating objects and it has to travel through a medium.
What is ultrasound?
Noise frequency that is above human hearing
What is resonance?
When two objects vibrate at the same frequency
What is intensity?
The rate at which the sound waves travel through a medium
What is a decibel?
The unit that intensity is measured in
What is fundamental frequency?
The frequency of a standing waves vibration
What is harmonics?
The vibration of the fundamental frequency and a certain whole number and multiplied.
Sonar
System that uses signals and echo returns to determine the location of the object.
Basilar membrane
A long flexible membrane in the cochlea. Different parts of it vibrate at different frequencies.
Photon
A unit or quantum of light. Ex. Light beam is a stream of photons because they don’t have mass.
Radar
Use radio waves to determine the velocity and location of an object.
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Light at all possible energies, frequencies, and wave lengths.
What is a light ray?
An imaginary line that is running in the direction that light travels.
What is virtual image?
Image that forms at a location where the light rays appear but they are not actually there
What is a real image?
Image of the object that is formed by the light rays where they actually come together.
What is diffuse reflection?
When the reflection of light is reflected in all different directions.
What is geometrical optics?
When you are studying light in cases where it is a ray.
What is a convex mirror?
Mirrors that bulge out and makes the light rays go in different directions.
What is a concave mirror?
A mirror that is indented. It takes the light rays and moves reflects them towards one another.
What is total internal reflection?
Reflection that takes place in a substance when the light rays that are reflected are the same as the real ones but the real light is less than the critical angle.
What is a lens?
Transparent object that reflects lights to come together or move away to create an image.
What is magnification?
The change is the same of the object compared to its actual size.
What is a prism?
A system that has two or more transparent smooth surfaces that are at an angle from each other.
What is dispersion?
When light is separated because of the different wave lengths into different colors.
What is mirage?
An allusion caused by earths conditions
What is converging lens?
Bends light toward each other.
What is focal point?
Where the light rays meet at one point after they are reflected or refracted.
What is normal?
A perpendicular line to the surface where light hits then is reflected or refracted
What is the law of reflection?
The law which the angle of reflection and angle of incidence work together
What is the angle of reflection?
The angle of light rays reflecting off the surface.
What is the angle of incidence?
The angle of light rays striking the surface
What is pitch?
How high or low a sound is.
What is intensity?
Depends of the amount of light. The number of photons that move through a space
