- it was a bureau that was to feed and cloth war refugees in the south.
Black codes
*laws that intended to keep African Americans in the same condition similar to slavery.
Fourteenth amendment
- gave citizenship to anyone born in the U.S. and no state could deny the persons equality.
Fifteenth amendment
- no vote could be denied because of the person’s race, color or previous condition of servitude.
Carpetbaggers
- northerns who carried suitcases made of carpet and who wanted to take advantages of the south.
” All of these carpetbaggers being around makes me fell uncomfortable about our safety”
Scalawags
- white southerns who worked with republicans and supported the reconstruction.
” I think we can trust the scalawags because they are helping is with reconstruction.”
Compromise of 1877
- the republicans had to pull federal troops out of the south. Which ended the reconstruction.
” I’m glad the compromise of 1877 is over with, which means reconstruction is over.
Share- croppers
- Farmers who paid a share of their crops instead of paying cash rent.
” Many of out neighbors have become share- croppers.”
