The spine Flashcards

1
Q

What are the tests for back pain?

A
  • bloods: CRP, ALP, calcium
  • XR usually shows irrelevant things
  • MRI if considering surgery or there are red flags

16
Q

How do vertebrae join together?

A
  • facet joints above and below

- C2 has odontoid process which makes a joint with C1 anterior arch

17
Q

When do you also use a CT as well as an XR for a spinal fracture?

A
  • when more detail of fracture is needed
  • ?more fractures
  • XR normal but high suspicion of a fracture
18
Q

What do the intervertebral ligaments do?

A
  • provide spinal stability
  • seen on MRI
  • polo in polo packet
19
Q

What are the two possibilities for bone tumour action on XR?

A
  • bone fights and makes more bone so there is white and sclerosis
  • bone is destroyed and there is less white and potential vertebral collapse
20
Q

What are the causes of spinal cord disease?

A
  • trauma
  • tumour
  • demyelination
  • ischaemia
