Histology Flashcards
What are the main features of skeletal muscle?
striated
unbranched
multinucleate
Does the A band or the I band change?
the A bAnd Always stAys the sAme but I band changes
Why does skeletal muscle look striated?
light and dark bands in the different myofibrils line up so there is striation
What are the cells that produce more muscle in skeletal muscle?
stem cells called satellite cells
What is a motor unit?
one motor neurone and all the muscle fibres it innervates
What are the features of cartilage?
- avascular
- semi-rigid
- permeable
- deformable
- cells are nourished by diffusion
What are the features of bone?
- rigid
- nourished by blood vessels
- not permeable
Where are the cells making up cartilage?
chondrocytes which live in a lacuna made by themselves
What is ECM made up of?
- mostly water
- type 2 collagen
- proteoglycans
What are the three types of cartilage?
- hyaline: common, blue/white
- elastic: yellow, flexible
- fibrocartilage: dense type 1, white
What is bone made up of?
- bioapatite
- collagen
- water
- non-collagen proteins
Where are the two types of bone situated?
- cortical bone is on the shaft outer shell and is dense
- cancellous bone is in the ends and is more fine
What are Haversion canals?
- allows osteons to live and they are surrounded by cement lines
- cancellous bone lacks these because the osteocytes survive from marrow spaces
What are osteoprogenitor cells?
- on surface
- pool of reserve osteoblasts
What are osteoblasts?
- bone forming cells
- RER and mitochondria
