the empire had to sustain a real crisis. the emperors of this time are known as soldier emperors because their power rested solely on their soldiers; mights and they acquired the power through military coups.
large parts of the empire were devastated and payed no taxes. trade and agricultural produce declined.
there was also a complete transformation in roman monetary system.
the provinces of Africa and Asia became increasingly more important.
