thin layer at the top mostly made of dead cells
What is the dermis?
thick layer of tissue underneath epidermis that contains blood vessels, nerves, follicles, glands
What is the hypodermis?
deep layer of fat to protect and insulate body
What is the name for skin oil glands?
sebaceous glands
What is the name for body temperature control?
thermoregulation
What does it mean to be cold-blooded?
cannot regulate your own temperature, require external sources of heat
Give 2 other terms that mean “cold-blooded.”
ectothermic, poikilothermic
Which types of organisms are warm-blooded?
birds and mammals
Give examples of bodily structures that retain heat.
feathers, insulating fat, hair
How does our body respond to a rise in core temperature?
blood vessels in dermis dilate so blood reaches surface of skin allows heat to leave body, produces sweat
Where is smooth muscle found?
walls of hollow organs
Is the cardiac muscle found in blood vessels?
