what is a belief system?
where members of group share commitment to set of beliefs and values that systematically defines way of perceiving social, cultural, physical and psychological world.
what can belief system be categorised into?
as religious and non-religious.
what do both categories of belief system have in common?
Both have ritual, symbols, stories, traditions and customs
what do BS influence?
our identity and our meaning of life (from macro, meso and micro)
what is BS a way of?
organising the beliefs of whole community of people at the meso or macro leve
what is macro and meso level BS?
Meso belief system if localised and only involves few people, or macro belief system if national or even internal following and involves thousands of people
what is ideology?
organised collection or body of ideas that reflects beliefs, values and interests of group, system, institution or nation.
what does ideology refer to?
to body of doctrine, myth and symbols held by group that guides individual and group actions.
what does ideology offer?
perspective through which world can be understood and explained. E.g. Marxism, Feminism, Confucianism
at what levels does ideology function?
micro, meso and macro level
differences between BS and ideology?
*level of organisation (belief ‘system’ indicates organised, whereas ideology less organised, more ingrained.)
what does BS and ideology produce?
worldview
what is worldview?
perspective of world from set of beliefs or ideologies.
what can worldview cause?
cause conflicts between different belief systems/ideologies, having impact of world events, e.g. conflicts between Christianity and Islam throughout history
