the nature and impact of change and resistance to change Flashcards
what is dissent?
when people disagree with each other
when is there more dissent?
The more people there are, the more dissent there will be.
what is full of dissent?
Every organisation, including religion
why has dissent, however, occur more peacefully in Buddhism than other religions?
probably because Buddhism is a way of living rather than about doctrines of God
what can dissent lead to?
factions and splits in the tradition
how has dissent been managed by Buddhism?
successfully
what has Buddhism management to dissent allowed for?
to merge easily wherever it expands
what are differences seen as for Buddhism?
is seen as points of enrichment rather than being threatening to each other
However, serious instances of dissent in Buddhism has occurred, concerning Buddhism’s response of?
*advanced technologies and *women’s issues (gender equality).
what do many Buddhists find difficult about SGI?
it grasped modern technology so fully to preach its message;
what do traditional Buddhists fund hard to accept?
that this is what the Buddha would have done or that a belief system about finding enlightenment within, fits with being active in media and social media
why is dissent in technology a big issue?
dissent between forms of Buddhism is real and quite contentious, with both sides declaring the other side to have somehow missed the point about what Buddhism should be in world today
what is issue of gender contentious?
especially whether women should be ordained and whether they should be the equivalent of male monks.
why has this become particularly contentious in Western countries?
Buddhism confronts the women’s movement who want equality
like any religions, what does Buddhism have?
internal tensions
what do some argue about the role of monks/nuns?
they have no place in the modern world and that their roles should die out.
There was much criticism of the neutral role played by monks in
the many upheavals to the Asian world in the times of European colonisation
The European colonists took hold of the
the Asian countries
what did European colonists become?
powerful and wealthy at the expense of the disadvantages/powerless/impoverished local Asian communities
what did Buddhist do in response to colonists?
nothing, didnt fight back, unlike Islam religion
why did such response to colonist cause tension within Buddhism?
with some arguing that true Buddhist should not become involved in day to day politics and struggles and that the very essence of Buddhist beliefs is in avoiding the distractions of these things so that you can concentrate on personal enlightenment.
what did others argue?
that the essence of types of Buddhism is in finding a way for Buddhist beliefs to be applied to real world in a positive and helpful way
So, different types/forms of Buddhism can lead to
different conclusions about the need for continuity, change and resistance.
