The Self Flashcards
The concept of impression formation.
differentiating, familiarizing and relating between self and others.
self concept~ what we think of ourselves.
understanding our self-concept is important for understanding how we form impressions of others.
Social Comparison (Festinger, 1952) there is a drive within individuals to gain accurate self-evaluations.
+ individuals evaluate their opinions and abilities by comparing themselves to others
+This is to reduce uncertainty, understanding others and understanding how to define the self.
Carl Rogers believed…
self-concept develops overtime.
everything (behavior, cognition etc.) revolves around how well we know ourselves.
we have a role in the environment.
we control our own behavior.
if the environment doesn’t block our progress, we can work towards self-actualization.
self concept is in 3 components: self-image, self-esteem & ideal self.
Maslow’s Pyramid of Realization
It is the pyramid of human potential.
Physiological, Safety,Love/Belonging, Esteem, Self-Actualization.
each stage must be met in order to reach self-actualization.
self-actualization~ the highest realization of human potential.
Issues with Maslow’s Pyramid of Realization
It does not consider individual factors.
Realistically, human development isn’t as orderly as the pyramid structure suggests it should be.
we can still reach self-actualization without meeting the lower steps.
The Self (Rogers, 1959)
begins from childhood
we begin with the inability to distinguish between self and the environment.
things don’t just exist for us i.e. “its mine”
As we start to develop, we’re more ego-centric.
Throughout our lifespan to adolescnce, we think more on how we fit with/our role with our environment.
