The Scientific Method Flashcards
What are the six steps to the Scientific Method?
1- Observation
2- Question
3- Hypothesis (must be testable and tentative)
4- Prediction (if this - then that)
5- Experiment
6- Conclusion
What are the four kinds of variables?
1- Independent variables
2- Dependent variables
3- Control variables
4- Confounding (uncontrollable) variables
What is an independent variable?
The independent variable is what’s being tested (IF)
What is the dependent variable?
The specific, measurable result (THEN)
What is the control variable?
The conditions set and maintained throughout the experiment. Must be kept constant so the outcome is understandable.
What is a confounding (uncontrollable) variable?
Things that cannot be controlled
What does it mean for the hypothesis to be testable and tentative?
If you are not able to test the hypothesis, it is not valid
The hypothesis must be able to be wrong
