Body Cavities Flashcards
What cavities are in the Dorsal Cavity?
Protects the nervous system.
Houses the cranial and vertebral cavity
What is the ventral body cavity and what does it house?
The more anterior of the closed body cavities. Houses the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity.
What is the thoracic cavity and what does it house?
The superior cavity in the ventral cavity.
Houses the
left and right pleural cavities (lungs)
Pericardial cavity (heart)
and the superior mediastinum cavity (thymus)
What is the abdominopelvic cavity and what does it house?
Inferior to the thoracic in the ventral cavity, it houses the abdominal and the pelvic cavities.
What is the abdominal cavity and what does it house?
Superior in the pelvic cavity in the abdominopelvic cavity. Houses the digestive organs.
What is the pelvic cavity and what does it house?
Inferior to the abdominal cavity in the abdominopelvic cavity. Houses the urinary bladder, reproductive organs, and the rectum.
What is the serosa, or serous, membrane?
The thin, double layered membrane that lines the ventral body cavities and organs.
What are the serosae associated with the heart?
The Parietal pericardium is the outer membrane. The visceral pericardium is the inner membrane.
What is serous fluid?
Fluid that separates and lubricates the parietal and visceral membranes. It is secreted by both membranes.
What are synovial cavities?
Joint cavities. Enclosed with a fibrous capsules that surround freely movable joints. Secrete lubricating fluid
What is the mediastinum?
The cavity where you can find the Thymus. Superior to the Pericardial cavity, intermediate to the lungs.
