Chapter 1: The Human Body - An Orientation Flashcards
What is Anatomy?
Anatomy studies the structure of body parts and their relationship to one another.
What is Physiology?
Physiology concerns the function of the body.
What is Gross Anatomy?
“Macro”
Study of large body structures visible to the naked eye.
What is regional anatomy?
An approach to gross anatomy that focuses on all structures within a given region.
What is systemic anatomy?
An approach to gross anatomy that study’s specific systems (like the cardiovascular system)
What is surface anatomy?
An approach to gross anatomy that focuses on underlying systems as they relate to the skin or “surface” (bulging muscles and veins etc)
What is microscopic anatomy?
Deals with structures too small to be seen with the naked eye.
What is developmental anatomy?
Traces structural changes that occur through the life span. Embryology studies changes before birth.
What is the Integumentary System?
Forms the external body covering, protects deeper tissues, synthesizes vitamin D, and houses pain receptors and sweat/oil glands.
What is the Skeletal System?
Protects and supports body organs, and provides a framework the muscles use to cause movement. Produces blood cells and stores minerals.
What is the muscular system?
Allows manipulation of the environment, locomotion and facial expression. Maintains posture, and produces heat.
What is the nervous system?
The fast paced control system. Responds to internal and external changes by activating muscles and glands.
What is the endocrine System?
Glands that secrete hormones that regulate processes such as growth, reproduction, and nutrient use (metabolism)
What is the cardiovascular System?
Blood vessels, blood which carries oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, wastes, etc. The heart pumps the blood.
What is the Lymphatic/Immunity System?
Picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to blood. Disposes of debris in the lymphatic stream. Houses white blood cells (lymphocytes). Mounts the attack against foreign substances within the body.
