Q

What is surface anatomy?

A

An approach to gross anatomy that focuses on underlying systems as they relate to the skin or “surface” (bulging muscles and veins etc)

Q

What is developmental anatomy?

A

Traces structural changes that occur through the life span. Embryology studies changes before birth.

Q

What is the Integumentary System?

A

Forms the external body covering, protects deeper tissues, synthesizes vitamin D, and houses pain receptors and sweat/oil glands.

Q

What is the Skeletal System?

A

Protects and supports body organs, and provides a framework the muscles use to cause movement. Produces blood cells and stores minerals.

Q

What is the muscular system?

A

Allows manipulation of the environment, locomotion and facial expression. Maintains posture, and produces heat.

Q

What is the nervous system?

A

The fast paced control system. Responds to internal and external changes by activating muscles and glands.

Q

What is the endocrine System?

A

Glands that secrete hormones that regulate processes such as growth, reproduction, and nutrient use (metabolism)

Q

What is the cardiovascular System?

A

Blood vessels, blood which carries oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, wastes, etc. The heart pumps the blood.

Q

What is the Lymphatic/Immunity System?

A

Picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to blood. Disposes of debris in the lymphatic stream. Houses white blood cells (lymphocytes). Mounts the attack against foreign substances within the body.

16
Q

What is the Respiratory System?

A

Keeps blood supplied with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide.

17
Q

What is the Digestive System?

A

Breaks down food into absorbable units. Indigestible foodstuffs are eliminated as feces.

18
Q

What is the Urinary System?

A

Eliminates nitrogenous wastes from the body. Regulates water, electrolyte, and acid-base balance of the blood.

19
Q

What is the Reproductive System?

A

Overall function is production of offspring.

20
Q

What are the 12 Organ Systems?

A

Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Cardiovascular, Lymphatic, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, and Reproductive.

21
Q

What are the two types of membranes?

A

Parietal - lines cavities and anchors organs in place.
Visceral - Covers organs like plastic wrap.

22
Q

What are the eight requirements for life?

A

Maintaining Boundaries
Movement
Responsiveness
Digestion
Metabolism
Excretion
Reproduction
Growth

23
Q

What are the five Survival Needs of life?

A

Nutrients
Oxygen
Water
Normal Body Temperature
Appropriate Atmospheric Pressure

24
Q

What are Professor C’s requirements for Life?

A

Complex, organized structure
Acquire and use energy - metabolism
Have genetic material
Respond to environment (responsiveness)
Maintain homeostasis
Reproduce
Evolve and change over time
