Republic
A form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders.
Patrician
A member of a wealthy, privileged upper class.
Plebeian
The group of common farmers, artisans, and merchants who made up the majority of the population in early Rome.
Tribunes
Elected representatives who protected the rights of the plebeians from unfair acts of patrician officials.
Consuls
Officials who commanded the army and directed the government. Their term lasted one year and the same Consul could not be elected for another 10 years.
Senate
The aristocratic branch of Rome’s government which had both legislative and administrative functions in the republic. Its 300 members were from the upper-class.
Dictator
A leader who had absolute power to make laws and command the army.
Legions
Large military units into which Roman soldiers were organized.
The Punic Wars
3 wars fought between Rome and Carthage starting in 264 B.C. ending with a win for Rome.
Hannibal
A Carthaginian general (29) who led Carthage in the 2nd Punic War and lead his soldiers on a trek with elephants, but still didn’t win Rome.
The Twelve Tables
A set of rules (some of the first) that became the basis for Roman law. They created the idea that all free people can have protection under the law.
