Hyksos
a group of nomadic invaders from Southwest Asia who ruled Egypt from 1640 to 1570 B.C.
New Kingdom
the period of ancient Egypt that followed the overthrow of the Hyksos rulers, lasting from about 1570 to 1075 B.C
Hatshepsut
declared herself pharoah around 1472 B.C. She took over for her young stepson, Thutmose III.
Thutmose III
Hatshepsut’s stepson who was a more warlike ruler and led victorious invasions eastward.
Nubia
a region of Africa that straddled the upper Nile River
Ramses II
a pharoah who made a treaty with a Hittite King that lasted the rest of the century
Kush
a Nubian kingdom that lasted for about a thousand years, between 2000 and 1000 B.C.
Piankhi
a Kushite king who united the entire Nile Valley. His descendants became Egypt’s 25th Dynasty
Meroë
where the Kushite Royal family moved to after their defeat by the Assyrians. They prospered here.
