The roles of hormones in the body Flashcards
What does insulin do?
What does insulin do if the body has sufficient energy?
Insulin helps control blood glucose levels by signalling the liver and muscles and fat cells to take in glucose from the blood.
Insulin will signal the liver to take up glucose and store it as glycogen.
What does glucagon do and how do they do it?
It prevents blood glucose levels from dropping too low. To do this it acts on the liver in several ways. E.g. it stimulates the conversion of stored glycogen to glucose which can b released into the bloodstream. This process is called glycogenosis.
What does ADH do?
It tells your kidneys how much water to conserve
ADH regulates and balances the amount of water in your blood
What does Aldosterone do?
This hormone acts mainly in the functional unit of the kidney’s to aid the conservation of sodium, secretion of potassium, water retention and to stabilise blood pressure
What does the pancreas do?
What type of gland is the pancreas?
It maintains the body’s blood glucose balance
It is an endocrine gland. This means it secretes hormones into the blood. It is also an exocrine gland. This means it secretes enzymes through ducts
What does the liver store?
It stores ad manufactures glucose depending upon the body’s need
