Parts of the cell and their functions Flashcards
Cell surface/plasma membrane function
The cell surface controls the movement of substances going in and out of a cell
What is the function of the nucleus?
It controls the transcript of DNA which controls a cells activities. The nuclear pores allow substances such as RNA to pass between the nucleus and the cytoplasm
What is the function of the mitochondria?
It is the sit of aerobic respiration. It produces ATP during the process.
What is the function of chloroplasts?
The site of photosynthesis. They occur in the grana or in the stroma
What does the Golgi apparatus do?
Processes and packages new lipids and proteins. They also make lysosomes.
What do Golgi vesicles do?
Store the lipids and proteins made by the Golgi apparatus and transport them out of the cell.
What do lysosomes do?
They are digestive enzymes. They are used to digest worn down components of the cell as well as any invading cells
What do ribosomes do?
The site where proteins are made
What does a rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) do?
They fold and process proteins that have been made by the ribosomes
What does a smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) do?
Synthesis and process lipids
What does the cell wall do?
Supports the cell and prevents them from changing shape
What does a cell vacuole do?
Helps maintain the pressure inside a cell and keeps the cell rigid by becoming turgid.
What does a flagellum do?
Helps the cell to move
What do plasmids do?
Carry information such as an antibiotic resistance
What does a nucleoid do?
Carries genetic information that controls the cells activities
