the war against the french had been very expensive.the british had to keep more troops in america to protect the land they conquered.they wanted america to pay some of that cost.they decided to tax the americans

the british introduces the stamp act. this brought in a tax on official documents such as wills.

the stamp act congress was set up to fight the tax. it contained members from most of the colonies.often tax collectors were attacked and forced to give up their jobs
