Q

What is the physiological process of respiration?

A

Air in inhaled through the nose where it gets filtered, moistened, and warmed. It is then moved through the pharynx, into the larynx, through the trachea, and bronchi. In the second and last stage of the bronchioles the gaseous exchange of oxygen into the alveoli and carbon dioxide out begins and continues into the lungs.

Q

What is gaseous exchange?

A

In the alveoli the oxygen attaches to hemoglobin and transfers into the blood, where carbon dioxide is released in exchange.

Q

What are alveoli?

A

Air sacs which are in the bronchioles and the lungs that are the facilitator of oxygen gaseous exchange.

Q

What is the function of the breath during asana?

A

Slow of the breath allows for greater length/amount of gaseous exchange
Filtering and moistening of air through breath
Warms the air; which the lungs like as they contract in cold

Q

What is the functioning behind respiration/each breath?

A

Inhalation: diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract and expand the chest cavity, creating a lower pressure system
Exhalation: diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax and the chest cavity gets smaller, air is then moved out from the higher pressure system to the lower, with the help of the diaphragm
