The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the route of travel for oxygen to reach the lungs?
Firstly, the oxygen travels down the trachea which splits into the left and right bronchus. This then branches off into the bronchioles and further into the alveoli.
What is external respiration?
When oxygen and carbon dioxide switch places, by diffusion.
How does carbon dioxide enter the lungs?
Carbon dioxide passes out of the blood plasma into the lungs
What does mucus do?
Traps dust and bacteria so they do not block the alveoli
What do the cilia do?
Flicks trapped particles towards the throat to be swallowed or coughed out
Where does external respiration take place?
In the alveoli
What is bronchitis?
Inflammation of the bronchi
What is emphysema?
Inflammation of the lungs
What are venules?
Small veins which carry carbon dioxide back to the lungs
How does external respiration take place?
The capillaries with deoxygenated blood in enter the alveoli. Carbon dioxide and oxygen switch places via diffusion so the blood is now oxygenated. The oxygenated blood travels back to the heart and the carbon dioxide is breathed out.
What is the purpose of external respiration?
To distribute oxygen around the body and remove carbon dioxide
What is the purpose of external respiration?
To distribute oxygen around the body and remove carbon dioxide
How does the respiratory system affect dentistry?
May affect the dental treatment opted for, may lead to a medical emergency such as an asthma attack
