What does safeguarding mean?
Protecting people’s health, wellbeing and human rights, allowing them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect.
What does safeguarding children mean?
Protecting them from maltreatment and making sure they grow up in circumstances that are safe
What does safeguarding adults include?
Protecting their right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect, prevent the risk of abuse or neglect and making sure peoples wellbeing is promoted
Definition of abuse
Treated in a way that is unacceptable in a given culture at a given time
Definition of a vulnerable adult
Someone who may be in need of community care services by reason of mental or other disability, age or illness, someone who is unable to take care of themselves
What are the 7 types of abuse?
Physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, financial, discriminatory and institutional
Intraoral signs of sexual abuse
Ulceration, vesicles (small cysts), red or purple spot at the junction of the hard and soft palate
What is neglect?
The persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical or psychological needs, resulting in impairment of the child’s health or development.
Signs of neglect in dentistry
Recurrent caries and not attending for the treatment
The 5 Rs of safeguarding
Recognise - the type of abuse Respond - to the abuse Report - to the relevant personnel Record - in the appropriate area Refer - to the police or relevant organisation
What is the limitation for a dental professional in terms of safeguarding?
A dental professional cannot make a diagnosis of abuse or neglect, simply raise their concerns
The 3 stages of intervention
Preventive dental response - offer support, set targets, raise concerns with the parents
Preventive multi-agency management - liaising with other professionals who work with the family
Child protection referral - make a child protection referral
What is PREVENT?
Works to stop people from supporting terrorism or becoming a terrorist
What are the 5 British values?
Democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, tolerance of those with different beliefs and faiths
