What characteristics are protected under the Equality and Diversity Act?
Age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, gender reassignment, marriage, pregnancy and sex.
What is direct discrimination?
Deliberately treating someone unfairly
What is indirect discrimination?
Rules that apply to everyone but give someone with a protected characteristic an unfair disadvantage
What is diversity?
Diversity is a good range of people from different cultures, genders, ages etc and ensuring they are all treated fairly and equally
What is diversity in the workplace?
Employers hiring a range of different people
Give an example of not being inclusive
Treating a patient with less care and attention due to their sexual orientation
What is positive discrimination?
When someone with a protected characteristic or part of a minority group is given preferential treatment
What is equity?
Means that people should be treated differently to accommodate their needs but to reach an equal goal
What act is related to diversity and who does it protect?
The equality and diversity act 2010 which safeguards people with a protected characteristic
What is unconscious bias?
A bias that we are unaware of and happens out of our control
What is unconscious bias influenced by?
Socialisation, background, cultural environment and personal experiences
Give an example of unconscious bias
Treating everyone with a different coloured skin to yourself differently because you have had a bad experience with someone with that coloured skin in the past
