the renal system Flashcards
define the renal system
the renal system consists of the kidney and urinary system, and helps the body eliminate a liquid waste called urea and keeps chemicals + water in balance.
describe how the kidneys excrete urea
Urea is a waste product of protein. When there is more protein than needed in the body, there will be excess amino acids that cannot be stored in the body. Therefore, the amino acids gets broken down by the liver to be passed onto the blood to be filtered out by the kidney. After being filtered, it will be passed onto the bladder for storage before leaving the body
what are the 3 stages of filtering?
- ultrafiltration
- reabsorption
- release of waters
what would happen to someone with kidney failure?
kidney failure is when someone’s kidneys stop function properly. This affects the renal system by the kidney being unable to filter blood by being unable to remove any salt, water and waste from the bloodstream to keep the body in balance.
The kidneys are also important for regulating blood pressure and blood volume, so can cause high blood pressure.
The kidneys will be unable to produce hormones that help with red blood production in the bone marrow.
The body will also be unable to regulate fluid balance and won’t adjust amount of urine to body’s needs.
