cardiovascular system Flashcards
define the cardiovascular system
the cardiovascular system supplies oxygen and nutrients throughout your body and removes water through your blood.
what does the cardiovascular system consist of?
- the heart
- blood vessels
- blood
- electrical conduction system
what are the overall functions of the cardiovascular system?
- transports oxygen, nutrients and hormones around body via the bloodstream
- removes waste products (eg carbon dioxide)
- protection from infection using white blood cells
- maintaining the body’s tempature
what does the right side and left side of the heart do?
right side - pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs using the pulmonary arteries.
left side - pumps oxygenated blood around the body, which returns to the heart from the lungs using the pulmonary veins
what are the 3 types of blood vessels?
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
what are the 4 blood vessels in the cardiovascular system?
- Pulmonary vein - carries deoxygenated blood AWAY from heart to the lungs
- Pulmonary vein - RETURNS oxygenated blood from the lungs back into the heart
- Aorta - carries the oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body
- Vena Cava - carries deoxygenated blood back to the heart from other parts of the body
what are the functions of blood?
- transporting oxygen, nutrients and hormones across the body
- forming blood clots to stop blood loss
- carrying cells and antibodies to fight off infections
- removing waste or carrying waste to kidney and liver.
- maintaining temperature
- gaseous exchange
what are the types of blood? and what do they contain/do
- red blood cells - contains haemoglobin (a protein that picks up oxygen in the lungs to be. carried around the cardiovascular system).
- white blood cells - contains antibodies to fight of infections/germs
- platelets - cell fragments that causes blood clots
- plasma - contains glucose, amino acids and aids in the removal of urea.
