The endocrine system Flashcards
Define the endocrine system
The endocrine system is a complex network of glands and organs that regulate mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism and reproductive processes using hormones.
What hormone does Adrenal Glands produce and what are they used for?
They produce Epinephrine
This helps the body react in dangerous situations by causing temporary changes in the body, such as increasing the supply of oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles to give the body strength and speed for the flight or fight response.
What hormone does the Parathyroid Glands produce and what are they useful for?
Releases parathyroid hormone (PTH) which is responsible for the calcium balance in blood and bone health.
What hormone does the Thyroid Gland release and what is it useful for?
Releases thyroxine, which controls the metabolic rate.
What hormone does the Islets of Langerhans produce and what are they useful for?
Releases Insulin, which controls the blood sugar levels by producing MORE glucose.
What hormone does the Pancreas provide and what is it useful for?
Releases Glucagon, which controls blood sugar levels by producing LESS glucose.
What hormoneS does the Ovaries release and what are they useful for?
Releases Oestrogen, which controls the puberty and menstrual cycle.
Releases Progesterone, which maintains the womb-lining.
What hormoneS does the Putitury Glands produce and what are they useful for?
Releases Follicle Stimulating hormone (FSH), which triggers egg ripening and oestrogen production.
Releases Luteinising hormone (LH), which triggers egg release and progesterone production.
What hormones does the Testes produce and what are they useful for?
Produces Testosterone, which controls male puberty.
