The Nervous system Flashcards
What are the 3 roles of the nervous system?
- Sensory
- Integrative
- Motor
What is the central nervous system and what organs does it contain?
The central nervous system contains of the brain and spinal cords, and relays the nerve impulses and signals by comparing and analysing them. It doesn’t come into contact with the external environment
What is the peripheral system and what structures is it composed of?
The peripheral system includes all parts of the nervous system except the spinal cord and brain. It is made up of the nerves and senses called neurone.
What are the 5 parts of a typical neutron and description?
CELL BODY - The largest part of the cell and contains the nucleus.
DENDRITES - Short branch extensions that receives the stimulus and carries the impulses from environment into the cell body.
AXON - A long fibre that carries impulses away from the cell body
MYELIN SHEATH - Insulates the axon and is produced by Schwann cells.
NODES OF RANVIER - Gaps in the Myelin that helps the impulses jump across the axon.
What are the major differences between the somatic nervous system and the automatic nervous system
The Somatic Nervous System regulates the movement that is under our control, such as skeletal muscles, whereas the Automatic Nervous System regulates movement that is automatic and not under conscious control. Nerves in. Somatic Nervous system are reflex, such as touching something hot.
Give 2 examples of organs controlled by automatic nervous system.
Digestion, Heart rate, Heart Contractions, Breathing
