musculoskeletal system Flashcards
1
Q
define the muscoskeletal system
A
the musculoskeletal system gives your body structure, lets you move, and protects the internal organs. It can include bone, joints, muscles, cartilage and ligaments.
2
Q
what are the two divisions of the skeleton and what to they contain?
A
- Axial skeleton - skull, spinal cord
- Appendicular - limbs, girdle
3
Q
what are the main functions of bone?
A
- support the body
- protects the soft organs
- movement
- storage of mineral and salts
- blood cell formation
4
Q
what is osteoporosis?
A
is when the skeleton doesn’t get enough calcium, causing the bones to be unable to properly absorb calcium and the bones start to thin.
5
Q
what are joints?
A
when two bones come together
6
Q
what are the 3 types of joints and movement of each?
A
- Fibrous - immovable (skull, jaw, pelvis)
- Cartilaginous - slightly moveable (spine, ribs)
- Synovial - freely moveable (hinge, pivot, saddle)
7
Q
define each type of muscle
A
- Cardiac muscle - forms the heart, contracts to pump blood around the body, INVOLUNTARY movement.
- skeletal muscle - connects the bone, allows movement, VOLUNTARY movement
- Smooth muscle - controlled by the automatic nervous system, INVOLUNTARY movement, helps the lungs expand
