Church Authority
Hierarchical social structures. Helps attain salvation through the 7 sacraments. Transubstantiation means that the blood and bread become into body of christ
Corruption of the Catholic Church
Nepotism- promote family interest. Simony- buying/selling church offices, you can get offices in the church without being . Pluralism- holding multiple church positions. Absenteeism- not living in diocese, not living in the grounds of properties, not surviving the community. Indulgences- buying your way out of purgatory, the more likely. Cult of the saints- could become a saint, by the pope, way to use allow people more avenues to worship. Nobles and wealthy bourgeoisie hold high power.
Attempts to Reform
Erasmus and Thomas More, highlights corruption in the church, giving pointers for issues that could be changed, and praising the idea for people to have a closer relationship with god by themselves.

Key Ideas
Catholic monk. Only faith alone can bring you salvation: you shouldn’t have to pay indulgences, without the church. The bible is the guide, not the pope. Huge advocate for publishing bible in vernacular. Clergy should stay in diocese. Eliminate, simony, pluralism, nepotism, and greedy popes.

95 Theses- 1517
List of grievances to pope Leo. Pope rejects the suggestions, so he nails them to the doors of his church, prints in vernacular. Called into the DIet of Worms 1521, Charles 5, leader of the HRE, all move to excommunicate the church. Doesn’t matter to Luther. Continues from here to be a messenger.

Splits from the church because he’s not allowed to divorce. Creates Anglican church, supremacy act, treason act.

Too young to do much, but his advisors help. Continuing to push protestant reforms because it’s growing in size and number in Europe.

Marries Phillip II, they double down and try to build up catholic. They persecute and kill protestants.

Elizabeth I 1558-1603
Creates the Elizabethan Settlement, settles the issue of the church, while having religious tolerance. People on both sides are upset, by doing too much or not enough. Becomes a politique, valuing political unity over religious preference.
Effects of the Reformation
Calvinism
Predestination is embraced. Very few people were chosen to be saved, you can’t feel if you are chosen, but if they want to be, they will act like a really good Christian. Creates a society where people are acting in the best interest to support the church. Wealth is a sign of god’s favor.
Effects of the Reformation
Anabaptists
Comes from the Schleitheim confession, a list of declarations about what this group of people that they believe is wrong and how they wish to practice. They believe infant baptism is wrong, and must be willing to choose.
