Characteristics of the Northern Renaissance
Centered in Germany, inspired by the renaissance in Italy, but want to make it more Christian. Secularism doesn’t happen a lot, usually called Christian Humanism. They want to better themselves, but come through the study of religious text instead of the classics. Erasmus believes that people can improve themselves through the study of religious texts, while wanting the church to improve as well.
Reforms of the Northern Renaissance
Reason can co-exist with faith and the cosmos. people are open to the idea that there has to be some answers for why the world is the way it is. Key ideas is the heliocentric ideas of the universe, like the sun is the center of the universe. Religious reform, more individual relationships with god, less church influence. Brothers of the common life- priests live together in communities, gave worldly possessions away, to live the most faith centered way of life

Ideas of the renaissance is spread through the paper. Books and texts are more widely available. Moveable type for each page. Allow books to be printed in vernacular. Gutenberg bible is the first book that is printed in mass. Literacy rates rise, less reliance on the church.

Geometric perspective- 3d appearance on 2d
Classical architecture- Greek and roman
Mathematical ratios- symmetry and proportion
Secularism- religious imagery but not the soul purpose

More religious- faith still more at the center of daily life
