What is the criteria for dispensing emergency contraception?

A
  • Supply of emergency hormonal contraception
  • Patients eligible from age 13+
  • Patients age 13,14, 15 must be deemed Gillick competent and comply with Fraser
    guidance to supply
  • Supply based on timing of UPSI, weight/BMI, date of last period, usual cycle length
  • Pharmacist assessment if EC is suitable
  • Can supply up to 5 days post UPSI
  • Referral for other EC methods e.g. intrauterine coil
  • Sexual Health advice
  • Signpost if not happy to supply

What is the criteria for bridging & Quickstart contraception dispensing?

A
  • Supply of contraception to eligible patients
  • Aged 13-54 who are of childbearing potential
  • Patients under 16 must be deemed gillick/fraser competent
  • Can be supplied alongside EC (Bridging)
  • Or supplied at patient request until a regular supply can be established
    (QuickStart)
  • Pharmacist must check – BP, BMI, inclusion/exclusion criteria
  • Can supply - 84 x Desogestrel 75mcg tablets

  • Supply of regular medication where it is not possible to obtain supply through the
    usual route e.g. via GP prescription
  • Pharmacist must be sure that obtaining a prescription is not practicable
  • Patient must have been prescribed medication in the past
  • Must meet usual emergency supply specifications

  • Supply of antibiotic treatment for acute bacterial tonsillitis where appropriate
  • In accordance with a PGD
  • Patient presents with symptoms and is assessed by pharmacists
  • FeverPain score
  • Throat Swab

  • Example treatment – Phenoxymethylpenicillin 500mg qds for 5 days
