What does repeat dispensing allow pharmacies to do?
dispense repeat dispensing prescriptions issued by a GP, using Master
and Batch PAPER prescriptions;
ensure that each repeat supply is required; and
seek to ascertain that there is no reason why the patient should be
referred back to their GP.
Who are public health campaigns for + types?
people who:
* have diabetes;
* be at risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), high BP;
* who smoke;
* are overweight
types = prescription linked intervention & campaign based service
What is entailed in signposting?
- Provision of information to people visiting the
pharmacy, who require further support which the
pharmacy can’t provide - Pharmacies provided with a list of sources of care
& support locally - Expected to help people who need assistance
- Direct the patient to where they can access
support/service/care
What is entailed in support for selfcare
- Help manage minor ailments and common
conditions - Provision of advice and/or sale of medicines if
appropriate - Referrals from external sources (111, GP etc)
- Records of advice or interventions to be kept (use
PMR) - Advise on the appropriate use of the wide range of OTC/P medicines
What services do welsh pharmacies provide?

What is the discharge medicines service?
- Patients recently discharged from hospital will receive
greater support from local pharmacy teams to
manage their medicines. - Hospitals refer patients who would benefit from extra
guidance around new prescribed medicines to their
community pharmacy. - Patients are digitally referred to their pharmacy after
discharge from hospital. - 2 Part process in Wales
- 3 Part process in England
What are the clinical community services? (CCPS)
- Provision of 4 services under one service specification
- Common Ailments Service (CAS)
- Emergency Contraception. Contraception - Bridging & QuickStart
- Emergency Medicines Supply (EMS)
- Sore Throat Test & Treat (STTT)
- Accreditation via Ty Dysgu – National Clinical Services Accreditation Hub (NCSA)
What is the criteria for dispensing emergency contraception?
- Supply of emergency hormonal contraception
- Patients eligible from age 13+
- Patients age 13,14, 15 must be deemed Gillick competent and comply with Fraser
guidance to supply - Supply based on timing of UPSI, weight/BMI, date of last period, usual cycle length
- Pharmacist assessment if EC is suitable
- Can supply up to 5 days post UPSI
- Referral for other EC methods e.g. intrauterine coil
- Sexual Health advice
- Signpost if not happy to supply
What is the criteria for bridging & Quickstart contraception dispensing?
- Supply of contraception to eligible patients
- Aged 13-54 who are of childbearing potential
- Patients under 16 must be deemed gillick/fraser competent
- Can be supplied alongside EC (Bridging)
- Or supplied at patient request until a regular supply can be established
(QuickStart) - Pharmacist must check – BP, BMI, inclusion/exclusion criteria
- Can supply - 84 x Desogestrel 75mcg tablets
What is the criteria for the emergency medicines supply?
- Supply of regular medication where it is not possible to obtain supply through the
usual route e.g. via GP prescription - Pharmacist must be sure that obtaining a prescription is not practicable
- Patient must have been prescribed medication in the past
- Must meet usual emergency supply specifications
What is entailed in the sore throat test and treat service?
- Supply of antibiotic treatment for acute bacterial tonsillitis where appropriate
- In accordance with a PGD
- Patient presents with symptoms and is assessed by pharmacists
- FeverPain score
- Throat Swab
- Vital signs
- Example treatment – Phenoxymethylpenicillin 500mg qds for 5 days
