The Periodic Table Flashcards
Atoms of each element can be represented as what?
One or two letter symbols.
What is
C
O
Mg
Carbon.
Oxygen.
Magnesium.
What is
Na.
Fe.
Pb
Sodium.
Iron.
Lead.
The periodic table does what?
Arranges elements with similar properties together.
Elements of similar properties form what?
Columns.
What are the vertical columns called?
Groups
Roman numerals often used for them.
All of the elements within a group have what?
Same number of electrons in their outer shell.
Name the group 1 elements.
Lithium. Sodium. Potassium. Rubidium. Caesium. Francium.
Metals in group 1 can do what?
React with water to form an alkaline solution and hydrogen gas.
Metals in group 1 react with oxygen to form what?
An oxide.
The nobles gases…
Group 0.
Name 3 noble gases.
Helium.
Neon.
Argon.
How many electrons do the elements in group 0 have?
8 in their outer shell.
Except helium which only has 2.
Group 0 elements are described as being what?
Stable.
Unreactive.
The top number when looking at an element on the periodic table is called what?
Mass number.
What is the mass number?
Total number of protons and neutrons.
The bottom number when looking at an element on the periodic table is called what?
Atomic number.
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons.
Also tells you the number of electrons.
How would you find the amount of neutrons in an atom?
Subtract the atomic number from the mass number.
Metals located on the left of the periodic table?
Reactive metals.
Metals located within the middle of the periodic table?
Transition metals.
The metals towards the right of the periodic table?
Non-metals.
Metals on the very right of the periodic table?
Noble gases.
