Renewable Energy Sources Flashcards
Where is geothermal energy only possible?
In volcanic areas where hot rocks lie quite near the surface.
The source of much of the heat is the slow decay of various radioactive elements, including uranium deep inside the Earth.
How does geothermal work?
Steam and hot water rise to the surface and used to drive a generator.
Brilliant free energy with no real environmental problems.
In some places where is geothermal heat used?
To heat buildings directly, without being converted to electrical energy.
What are the negatives about geothermal energy?
There isn’t many suitable locations for power plants.
Cost is high compared to the amount of energy we get from it/
What are biofuels made from?
Plants and waste.
Geothermal energy.
Heat from underground.
What are biofuels used for ?
Generating electricity in exactly the same way as fossil fuels.
What can biofuels used in?
Cars just like fossil fuels.
What can biofuels actually be?
Solids - straw, nutshells, woodchips.
Liquids - Ethanol.
Gases - Methane ‘biogas’ from sludge digesters.
Where can we get biofuels from?
Organisms that are still alive or from deal organic matter like fossil fuels from organisms that have been living much more recently.
Crops like sugar cane can be what?
Fermented to produce ethanol pr plant oils can be modified to produce biodiesel.
